Photo Print: The Dentist - homage to Caravaggio by Derek Galon

THE DENTIST ARRIVED IN TOWN! My friend - fantastic model Michael Ward (the one losing his tooth) showed me The Dentist by Caravaggio. I knew it for a long time, but now I saw it at a different angle. Another brilliant inspiration for my Painterly series. It reminded me that - until fairly recent years - such dentists/blacksmiths were the only way of getting your teeth fixed. It also reminded me that - many years ago, while travelling - I had to have a tooth pulled without anesthetics. A strong dentist's "assistant" held me firmly so I could not move. All together an awful experience. Remembering my personal story, I did not want to copy Caravaggio's setup, but to illustrate my memories - with the Dentist and Assistant working on their client in quite ruthless way. Caravaggio had some other people staring at the action, and enjoying the spectacle, and they were most appropriate also on my image - but as this is a blend between His vision and my memories - I could not resist to add myself to this image - in the form of a village idiot (left) who is not exactly thrilled with the whole show.
