Hans-Werner Sahm writes about himself:

"Saturated with the whole variety of sensory perceptions resulting from the intense images, light impressions, smells and sounds of the then still halfway intact Allgäu, I came to Munich as a 10-year-old in the early 1950s. The collision with the big city was intense. At school, I was really only interested in art classes. Three years before graduation, I left school. For me, leaving school was a first big step towards freedom. My surrealistic paintings of that time were bad, but painted with great concern. Nevertheless, I was put into an apprenticeship in the field of reproduction technology. I got into a professional rut that slowly threatened to suffocate me. After nine long years of office work, I finally quit. I felt less constricted, developed my work rhythm, and in 1981 painted the picture Finally Free!"
